Allegiant Air
Airline Code: G4
About Allegiant Air:
Originally founded in 1997 as WestJet Express, Allegiant Air adopted its current
name due to dispute with West Jet Air Center as well as WestJet Airlines of Canada.
Domestic operations, as well as charter service to Canada and Mexico, began after
the airline received its certificate in 1998.
Allegiant Airlines first hub was in Fresno, California. Allegiant later opened its
hub in Long Beach, California after the shutdown of WinAirlines. Because the airlines
could not bring enough revenue to cover its costs, G4-Allegiant Airlines filed for
bankruptcy on December of 2000.
Joining as President and Chief Executive Officer in June 2001, Maurice J Gallagher
Jr led the airline to its present form. He moved the base to Las Vegas and focused
on smaller markets. Having grown from 2 destinations, Allegiant Air Airlines now
serves over 50 destinations from Las Vegas and Orlando/Sanford/St. Petersburg in
Florida.
